Arizona Tree Frog vs. Canyon Tree Frog
Both are small tree frogs with big toe pads; they meet in the Mogollon Rim country and the southeastern mountains, the Arizona Tree Frog in wet meadows and rain pools in the pines, the Canyon Tree Frog on boulders beside canyon streams. A: A dark stripe from the nostril through the eye and back along the side in the Arizona Tree Frog; no stripe through the eye; the head is blotched like the body in the Canyon Tree Frog. B: Smooth in the Arizona Tree Frog; rough and warty in the Canyon Tree Frog. C: Bright green (sometimes bronze), a few small dark spots in the Arizona Tree Frog; grey, tan or olive with darker blotches, coloured like the rock in the Canyon Tree Frog. Calls differ: a fast series of low clucking notes (Arizona Tree Frog) vs an explosive, nasal rattle like a bleat (Canyon Tree Frog).
