Black-spotted Newt vs. Eastern Newt

Their ranges meet near the San Antonio River on the Texas coast; an old Victoria County newt record may be either. A: Many big, round black spots on the back and sides; no red spots in the Black-spotted Newt; small black dots; most have a row of red spots ringed with black in the Eastern Newt. B: No red eft: the young stay dull green-brown in the Black-spotted Newt; a bright orange-red eft with rough, dry skin in the Eastern Newt. The Black-spotted Newt has a yellow-orange belly with big black spots; the Central Newt of eastern Texas a yellow belly with fine black dots.
