Bog Dwarf Salamander vs. Coastal Plain Dwarf Salamander
Both dark-sided dwarf salamanders live round the seepage bogs of Mobile and Baldwin counties; the Bog Dwarf was split off in 2017. A: Tiny: under 2.6 in, about an inch snout to vent in the Bog Dwarf Salamander; bigger: to 3.5 in in the Coastal Plain Dwarf Salamander. B: Square at the base, round behind, with no keel in the Bog Dwarf Salamander; usually a keel along the top: wedge-shaped in the Coastal Plain Dwarf Salamander. Under the chin the Coastal Plain Dwarf has dark specks (Guyer et al. 2022). The Bog Dwarf keeps to sphagnum hillside bogs, often round pitcher plants.
