California Newt vs. Rough-skinned Newt
Both live along the coast from Santa Cruz County to Mendocino County; their records overlap there. A: Big eyes that bulge past the outline of the head in the California Newt; small eyes set inside the outline of the head in the Rough-skinned Newt. B: A pale lower eyelid, lighter than the back in the California Newt; a dark lower eyelid, the same colour as the back in the Rough-skinned Newt. Both are brown above and orange below and both have a deadly skin poison: wash your hands after touching one.
