Compare two species

Desert Grassland Whiptail vs. Plateau Striped Whiptail

Both are all-female striped whiptails with no spots; they meet where the desert grassland of central and eastern Arizona climbs onto the Mogollon Rim and the Colorado Plateau. A: Small, granular, not enlarged (like the back granules) in the Desert Grassland Whiptail; a patch of distinctly enlarged, plate-like scales in the Plateau Striped Whiptail. B: Pale bluish-grey or dull greyish-brown; bright blue only in the young in the Desert Grassland Whiptail; bright turquoise to sky-blue, kept into adulthood in the Plateau Striped Whiptail. The forearm scales need a close look in hand or a sharp photo; the tail colour shows in the field.
