Desert Nightsnake vs. Glossy Snake
Both are pale, smooth-scaled, blotched snakes that come out at night. A: the Nightsnake has a large dark blotch on each side of the neck and a dark stripe behind the eye; the Glossy Snake's neck has ordinary blotches and its head is plain and faded-looking. B: the Nightsnake's pupil is vertical; the Glossy Snake's is round or only slightly oval. The Glossy Snake is much bigger (to 5 ft). Their ranges overlap across the Southwest (the Glossy Snake is not in Idaho).
