Elegant Earless Lizard vs. Western Earless Lizard
Very alike: the Elegant Earless lives in the southeast and centre of Arizona, the Western (Common Lesser) Earless in the northeast and east; they meet where the two ranges touch in east-central Arizona. A: Larger, with a longer tail: to 3 in (7.5 cm) head and body in the Elegant Earless Lizard; smaller with a shorter tail: to 2.75 in (7 cm) head and body in the Western Earless Lizard. B: A row of chevrons almost to the tip of the tail in the Elegant Earless Lizard; no chevrons on the last third of the tail in the Western Earless Lizard. Both have a plain white tail underside in Arizona (the Spot-tailed Earless of Texas has black spots there). Range is the surest guide.
