Houston Toad vs. Gulf Coast Toad
The Gulf Coast Toad is common all through the Houston Toad's sandy pine and oak country east of Austin. A: Thick crests between the eyes, but no deep valley between them in the Houston Toad; high crests make a deep, sunken valley between the eyes in the Gulf Coast Toad. B: Mottled all over; no broad dark band along the side in the Houston Toad; a broad dark band along each side, edged above by a pale stripe in the Gulf Coast Toad. Calls differ: the Houston Toad gives a long, high, clear trill like a tinkling bell; the Gulf Coast Toad a short, dry trill like a ratchet.
