Compare two species

Idaho Giant Salamander vs. Western Tiger Salamander

Both are large, heavy salamanders. A: the Idaho Giant Salamander is marbled with dark brown or black over a paler brown or coppery ground and has a huge, broad head; the Western Tiger Salamander has bold dark spots or bars on a yellow or olive ground (or the reverse). B: Idaho Giant larvae, much more often seen than adults, live in cold, fast mountain streams, with short bushy gills and a low tail fin; Tiger Salamander larvae live in ponds and lakes, not streams. In Montana the Idaho Giant is found only in the far west near the Idaho line.
