Compare two species

Plateau Earless Lizard vs. Southern Earless Lizard

Long one species (the Spot-tailed Earless Lizard), split in 2019: they meet at the Balcones Escarpment, the Plateau one above it and the Southern one below. A: Square or rectangular blotches that join into bands in the Plateau Earless Lizard; oval blotches that stay separate in the Southern Earless Lizard. B: The rows of dark blotches stay separate in the Plateau Earless Lizard; the dark blotches tend to join along the back in the Southern Earless Lizard. The Southern Earless Lizard is a little bigger (about 2.4 in snout to vent, against 2) with more pores under the thigh; some breeding Plateau Earless Lizards turn orange. Place decides the hard ones.
