Pygmy Short-horned Lizard vs. Greater Short-horned Lizard

Both are short-horned lizards with a notch between stubby horns and one row of fringe scales. A: the Pygmy Short-horned Lizard's horns are tiny nubs; the Greater Short-horned Lizard's are short but stand out more clearly. B: the Pygmy is smaller (to 2.5 in head and body) than the Greater (to 4.75 in), but young Greaters are small too. Range is the surest guide in Idaho: the Pygmy lives in the west and north, the Greater in the east and southeast.
