Scarlet Kingsnake vs. Scarletsnake
The two share the sandy pinewoods of the Southeast (Scarletsnakes in 67 of the Scarlet Kingsnake's 79 one-degree squares; in Louisiana, records 13 to 34 km apart in the Florida Parishes). A: Rings that run round the body, red touching black in the Scarlet Kingsnake; red blotches on the back only, edged in black, on a white or cream ground in the Scarletsnake. B: The rings carry onto the belly, paler below in the Scarlet Kingsnake; plain white, no marks in the Scarletsnake. C: Red, rounded snout in the Scarlet Kingsnake; red, pointed snout that juts past the lower jaw in the Scarletsnake. Neither is a coralsnake: on a coralsnake, red touches yellow and the snout is black.
