Southern Painted Turtle vs. Painted Turtle
Two small painted turtles that bask together in the sloughs of the southern tip. Both have red marks around the rim of the shell and yellow stripes on the head and neck. The Southern Painted Turtle carries a bold red, orange or yellow stripe down the middle of its shell from neck to tail, there from hatching; the Painted Turtle has at most a thin pale line. The Southern is also the smaller of the two, and its underside is plain yellow or tan.
