Two torrent salamanders split on genetics: Southern in the Coast Range south of the Little Nestucca and the Klamath Mountains, Cascade in the western Cascades. A: Yellow-green, heavily marked with bold black spots and blotches in the Southern Torrent Salamander; yellow, unspotted or with only sparse tiny flecks in the Cascade Torrent Salamander. B: Olive-brown to dark greenish-brown, heavily mottled in the Southern Torrent Salamander; dark brown to tan, the mottling less contrasting in the Cascade Torrent Salamander. C: Dense, bold white flecks; a wavy, broken edge between back and belly in the Southern Torrent Salamander; smaller, finer white flecks; a clean, sharp edge in the Cascade Torrent Salamander.
