Atlantic Coast Slimy Salamander vs. White-spotted Slimy Salamander
Two slimy salamanders that meet near the Fall Line in southeastern Virginia and cross in a hybrid zone, so many cannot be told apart; these are the usual differences (NC Parks). A: Small, slightly brassy white spots in the Atlantic Coast Slimy Salamander; larger, whiter spots in the White-spotted Slimy Salamander. B: Many white or yellowish spots in the Atlantic Coast Slimy Salamander; fewer white spots, the biggest low on the sides in the White-spotted Slimy Salamander. The Atlantic Coast Slimy is smaller on average. Go by where it is: the coastal plain for the Atlantic Coast, the Piedmont and mountains for the White-spotted.
