Caddo Mountain Salamander vs. Fourche Mountain Salamander
The two Arkansas-only mountain salamanders live on neighbouring Ouachita ridges (records 1 to 20 km apart in Montgomery and Polk counties); both have a pale chin. A: Many tiny, star-like brassy flecks scattered over the back in the Caddo Mountain Salamander; two rows of large, irregular, lichen-like pale blotches in the Fourche Mountain Salamander. B: Slender and smallish: adults about 3.5 to 4 in in the Caddo Mountain Salamander; big and stocky: adults 4.5 to 6.5 in in the Fourche Mountain Salamander. Place helps: the Caddo Mountain Salamander lives in the Caddo Mountains, the Fourche Mountain Salamander on Fourche and Irons Fork mountains.
