Fourche Mountain Salamander vs. Rich Mountain Salamander
The two meet at the west end of Fourche Mountain in Polk County, where they hybridize; both are big, dark and pale-chinned. A: Black back with no chestnut or reddish wash in the Fourche Mountain Salamander; a chestnut, maroon or reddish wash on the back in the Rich Mountain Salamander. B: Two rows of large, lichen-like pale blotches along the back in the Fourche Mountain Salamander; white spots mostly low on the sides in the Rich Mountain Salamander. Animals from the hybrid zone at the west end of Fourche Mountain can show both: there, place decides.
