Cheoah Bald Salamander vs. Southern Appalachian Salamander
The two live together over the whole of Cheoah Bald and seldom hybridise (Highton & Peabody 2000); both may show red on the legs. A: Orange-red to red on top of the legs, mostly the upper legs in the Cheoah Bald Salamander; only a small red spot, if any, where the front leg meets the body in the Southern Appalachian Salamander. B: No white spots in the Cheoah Bald Salamander; a few small white spots on the back, bigger ones low on the sides in the Southern Appalachian Salamander. The Cheoah Bald looks the same as the Red-legged Salamander of the Nantahalas and Unicois; only place (Cheoah Bald) and DNA tell them apart.
