Common Garter Snake vs. Plains Garter Snake

Both are stocky garter snakes with barred lips. Count up from the belly to the pale side stripe: on a Common Garter Snake it sits on scale rows 2 and 3, on a Plains Garter Snake on rows 3 and 4. The Plains Garter's middle stripe is usually bright orange or yellow-orange, and it has a double row of black spots between the stripes. In Indiana the Plains Garter is found only in the northwest.
