Compare two species

Slender Glass Lizard vs. Common Garter Snake

The Slender Glass Lizard has no legs and stripes down its back, so it is constantly taken for a snake, especially a garter snake. Look at the eye: the glass lizard has movable eyelids and can blink; a snake's eye is covered by a clear fixed scale and never closes. The glass lizard also has small ear openings, a groove along each side of the body, and a stiff body with a very long tail that breaks off easily. Glass lizards live in dry sand prairie and grassland in northern and western Indiana.
