Desert Kingsnake vs. California Kingsnake
The two meet and mix in southeastern Arizona, around the San Pedro Valley; intergrades are common there. A: Speckled: a yellow dot on many side scales in the Desert Kingsnake; clean black between the bands, no speckles in the California Kingsnake. B: Thin yellow bands made of spots, often broken in the Desert Kingsnake; wide, clean white or pale yellow bands in the California Kingsnake. Snakes from the San Pedro Valley can show both, and range is then the best guide.
