Florida Red-bellied Cooter vs. Pond Slider
Both bask together in park ponds, and both are released pets in New York. Look behind the eye: the Pond Slider (Red-eared Slider) has a red or orange patch there; the cooter has only yellow stripes. Underneath, the slider has a dark smudge on each plate; the cooter's underside is usually plain yellow to orange-red.
