Holbrook's Southern Dusky Salamander vs. Carolina Swamp Dusky Salamander
The two swamp duskies meet on the Georgia coast near Riceboro, where Holbrook's name was fixed in 2022. A: Bold white to orange-red portholes low on the sides in the Holbrook's Southern Dusky Salamander; smaller, fainter pale portholes in the Carolina Swamp Dusky Salamander. B: Dark brown to black all over, no break between back and side; any tail stripe dull in the Holbrook's Southern Dusky Salamander; greenish-grey with an orange wash on top and a yellow-orange stripe on the thick tail in the Carolina Swamp Dusky Salamander. Turn it over: Holbrook's belly is black with silvery specks, the Carolina Swamp Dusky's a bright, grainy mix of dark, yellow and white (Pyron & Beamer 2022). Holbrook's tail is more keeled.
