Carolina Swamp Dusky Salamander vs. Piedmont Dusky Salamander
The two are neighbouring splits of the old Southern and Northern dusky salamanders, meeting where the Piedmont gives way to the coastal plain. A: Dark greenish-grey all over, the back hardly different from the sides in the Carolina Swamp Dusky Salamander; a clean brownish stripe down the back, edged in dark, set off from the sides in the Piedmont Dusky Salamander. The Piedmont Dusky's tail is sharply keeled, the Carolina Swamp Dusky's thick with only a weak keel. Place helps: swamps and floodplains of the coastal plain for the swamp dusky, ravine streams of the Piedmont for the other.
