Mississippi Mud Turtle vs. Eastern Musk Turtle
Both are small, dark, domed turtles with yellow lines on the head, in the same ponds and sloughs of eastern Oklahoma; turn them over. A: Large, covering most of the body, with two hinges in the Mississippi Mud Turtle; small, with wide strips of skin between the plates and one weak hinge in the Eastern Musk Turtle. B: Narrow yellow lines, often broken into spots in the Mississippi Mud Turtle; two bold white or pale stripes, one above and one below the eye, running onto the snout in the Eastern Musk Turtle. Musk turtles also have little fleshy barbels on the chin and the throat; mud turtles only on the chin.
