Mississippi Mud Turtle vs. Eastern Mud Turtle
Long treated as one species. The Mississippi Mud Turtle lives west of the Mississippi lowlands (Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, eastern Texas) and down the Mississippi valley; the Eastern Mud Turtle east of it, meeting in Mississippi, Louisiana and Tennessee. A: Two narrow yellow lines along each side, one above and one below the eye in the Mississippi Mud Turtle; mottled or speckled, without two bold lines in the Eastern Mud Turtle. Both have the same big lower shell with two hinges; where both live, the head lines and the place decide.
