Plains Hognose Snake vs. Eastern Hognose Snake
Both are stout, blotched snakes with an upturned snout that hiss, flatten the neck and play dead. The Plains Hognose is tan or grey with dark brown blotches and a sharply upturned, keeled snout with a cluster of small scales behind the tip; the belly and the underside of the tail are mostly black. The Eastern Hognose has a less sharply upturned snout with no small scales behind it, the underside of the tail paler than the belly, and comes in every colour from blotched to plain black.
