Southern Hognose Snake vs. Eastern Hognose Snake
The two hognoses share the sandhills and sandy pinewoods of the Sandhills and southern coastal plain, and both flatten, hiss and play dead. A: Sharply upturned, almost a spade in the Southern Hognose Snake; upturned, but less sharply in the Eastern Hognose Snake. B: Grey, tan or reddish with three rows of square dark blotches; never plain black or grey in the Southern Hognose Snake; blotched, or plain black or grey in the Eastern Hognose Snake. Turn it over: the underside of the Southern Hognose's tail is the same colour as its belly; the Eastern's is paler than its belly.
