Aquatic Garter Snake vs. Two-striped Garter Snake
Both live along streams in the Coast Ranges from Monterey to Santa Barbara County; their (blurred) records overlap there. A: Usually a yellow or orange stripe down the middle of the back in the Aquatic Garter Snake; never a stripe down the middle of the back in the Two-striped Garter Snake. B: Some (Santa Cruz area) lack it: they have a bright lemon-yellow throat in the Aquatic Garter Snake; olive or brown, often two rows of small dark spots; a stripe only low on each side in the Two-striped Garter Snake.
