Sierra Garter Snake vs. Two-striped Garter Snake
These two stream garter snakes meet in the southern Sierra Nevada, the Tehachapi Mountains and Kern County; their records touch there. A: A checkerboard of dark blotches, often a faint short stripe on the neck in the Sierra Garter Snake; no middle stripe; olive with two rows of small dark spots in the Two-striped Garter Snake. The Two-striped has a clean yellow stripe low on each side; both live in and beside rocky streams, and where they meet a dark, checkered snake is the Sierra Garter.
