Sierra Garter Snake vs. Aquatic Garter Snake
These two stream garter snakes meet in the far north (Shasta County); their records touch there. A: A checkerboard of dark blotches, the middle stripe faint, short or missing in the Sierra Garter Snake; usually a bold yellow or orange stripe in the Aquatic Garter Snake. The Aquatic Garter Snake usually has a bright yellow throat; some Aquatic Garters on the coast have no middle stripe, so range helps.
