Chattooga Dusky Salamander vs. Seal Salamander
Seal Salamanders share the Chattooga Dusky's headwater streams in the Cowee Mountains and on the Highlands Plateau. A: Paired spots joined into a wavy band with dark edges, white flecks in the Chattooga Dusky Salamander; a bold net of dark, worm-like lines on lighter brown in the Seal Salamander. B: A pale line from the eye to the jaw; a smaller head in the Chattooga Dusky Salamander; a bigger, heavier head in the Seal Salamander. The Seal's tail has a sharp keel and its belly is clean white; the Chattooga's tail is mostly round, flattened only near the tip.
