Florida Green Watersnake vs. Plain-bellied Watersnake

Plain-bellied Watersnakes share the swamps and river floodplains of south Georgia; both are big and plain-backed. A: Pale cream to yellowish, the lip and throat pale in the Florida Green Watersnake; plain orange-red to yellow, bright right up onto the lip in the Plain-bellied Watersnake. B: A row of small scales between the eye and the lip scales in the Florida Green Watersnake; the lip scales touch the eye in the Plain-bellied Watersnake. C: About 50 narrow dark bars on the sides in the Florida Green Watersnake; bold dark blotches across the back in the Plain-bellied Watersnake. Old Florida Greens may darken below toward the tail; the small scales under the eye stay the surest guide.
