Gopher Frog vs. Southern Leopard Frog
Southern Leopard Frogs breed in the same sandhill ponds as Gopher Frogs, and their tadpoles are hard to tell apart (NC Parks). A: Crowded dark spots and blotches all over a pale grey or brown back in the Gopher Frog; fewer round dark spots, well spaced on a green or brown back in the Southern Leopard Frog. B: Stout, with a big head and short legs; slightly warty skin in the Gopher Frog; slim and smooth, with a pointed snout and long legs in the Southern Leopard Frog. The Southern Leopard Frog has a pale spot in the middle of the eardrum. Calls differ: the Gopher Frog a deep two-second snore, the Southern Leopard a guttural, chuckling croak.
