Squirrel Treefrog vs. Green Treefrog
Both are green treefrogs of the southeastern Texas coastal plain and the Gulf states; green Squirrel Treefrogs are often taken for young Green Treefrogs. A: No sharp white stripe along the side: the green fades into the pale belly in the Squirrel Treefrog; a sharp white or cream stripe along the lip and the side, often edged dark in the Green Treefrog. B: Very variable: often dark spots, blotches or a pale bar between the eyes, and it changes quickly from green to brown in the Squirrel Treefrog; smooth, usually plain leaf-green to dark olive, at most a few small gold flecks in the Green Treefrog. The Squirrel Treefrog is smaller (to 1.6 in); the Green Treefrog reaches 2.5 in. Squirrel: a raspy, duck-like 'waaak'; Green: a bell-like 'quonk'.
