Compare two species

Northern Ravine Salamander vs. Eastern Red-backed Salamander

If it has a red, orange or yellow stripe down the back, it is a Red-backed — a Ravine never has one. The difficult animal is a lead-backed Red-backed, which is plain dark grey. Then look at the build: Ravine is much longer and thinner, with short legs, and finely flecked with silver, brass or white. And the chin and belly: salt and pepper on Red-backed, uniformly dark on Ravine.
