Compare two species

Spotted Dusky Salamander vs. Eastern Red-backed Salamander

Both are small brown salamanders found under cover in damp woods, and a lead-backed Red-backed can look like a plain dusky. The Spotted Dusky has a pale line from behind the eye to the angle of the jaw, hind legs much heavier than the front, a tail keeled above, and pairs of golden spots down the back; the Red-backed has no jaw line, legs of equal size, a round tail, a straight-edged red or grey stripe (or none), and a salt-and-pepper belly.
