Compare two species

Northern Dusky Salamander vs. Eastern Red-backed Salamander

A lead-backed Red-backed and a Dusky are both plain dark salamanders. Look at the side of the head: a pale line from behind the eye to the angle of the jaw means Dusky. Then the legs: a Dusky's hind legs are much heavier than its front legs; a Red-backed's are about equal. Dusky lives beside streams and seeps; Red-backed on the woodland floor.
