Compare two species

Allegheny Mountain Dusky Salamander vs. Northern Dusky Salamander

Both have the pale line from the eye to the jaw and heavy hind legs, so ignore those. Look at the tail: a Northern Dusky's is flattened on the sides and sharply keeled along the top, wedge-shaped or triangular in cross-section; an Allegheny Mountain Dusky's is rounded or oval at the base and only weakly keeled. Then the back: a Northern Dusky is duller and dark brown, any tan stripe plain and fading with age; an Allegheny Mountain Dusky usually has a brighter, well-defined stripe (yellow, red, orange or brown) edged with dark lines, often with a row of dark V-shaped marks down the middle.
